Structures designed for operational loadings

Abstract
The disign of any highly stressed area of a structure must balance operational stresses against available local strength in such a way that the risk of premature failure is eliminated, along with unnecessary materials and production costs. Component strength is determined mainly by the material, the way it is fabricated, heat treatment, geometery and surface conditions.
