Title

EVALUATION OF BEHIND ARMOR BLUNT TRAUMA (BABT)—NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION WITH GHBMC M50 AND DUMMY TESTS WITH CTS-PRIMUS BREAKABLE THORAX

Abstract
The research on back face deformation (BFD) and the resulting impact on the body, known as behind armor blunt trauma (BABT), is an important component for the evaluation of personal protective equipment. Numerical and experimental analysis of the deformation of a hard-ballistic plate consisting of silicon carbide (SiC) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) composite after impact with a 7.62 mm × 51 NAMMO AP8 projectile provides the baseline for the present study. The assessment capability of the CTS-PRIMUS breakable dummy thorax with respect to BABT was investigated using a substitute polycarbonate projectile and a single-stage gas gun at up to 230 m/s. In addition, comparative data were determined numerically using the GHBMC M50 human model. The blunt criterion (BC) with reference to the probability of an AIS 2-3 injury was used to evaluate the BABT. The results were compared with post mortem human subject (PMHS) data from the literature.
