Title

Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) technique for direct alcohol fuel cell characterization

Abstract
In order to get an impression of the reactions taking place at an electro-catalyst, an appropriate analysis needs to combine electrochemical methods with a sensitive analysis technique capable of resolving transient processes. The detection of volatile products with differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) matches these prerequisites. The evolution of DEMS from its beginnings into a sophisticated analysis tool is described, including basic principles, common cell designs, experimental techniques and the combination of DEMS with other analytical methods. Potential applications of DEMS with respect to fuel cells are highlighted and the advantages and limitations of the method are depicted.
