Energy regeneration systems in cell-free protein synthesis in vitro

Abstract
Cell-free protein synthesis is a rapidly evolving technology that presents an alternative to conventional recombinant protein production. The technology utilizes cell lysates for ex situ protein synthesis. Advantages of the technology include the reduction of energy investments during cell cultivation and also expenses needed for strain optimization. At the moment, cell-free protein synthesis is done predominantly at lab scale in the form of batch processes. Any technology that would allow continuous protein production at commercial scale still needs to be developed. Basic considerations at this point include the design of suitable bioreactors as well as the supply of energy for maintaining the synthesis process. Despite these challenges, investigations show that the implementation of a continuous cell-free protein synthesis process is possible.
