Title

Comparison of Grating Lobe Suppression Using High Impedance Structure: EBG and BON in Phased Array Antenna

Abstract
In this work, two different types of HIS: Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) and Bed of Nails (BON) are designed and simulated to suppress the grating lobe of a 9-element array antenna. The array antenna operates at 6 GHz and the distance between antenna element is selected equivalent to 0.6 lambda. The EBG and BON structures are then integrated into phased array antenna along the E-plane to determine the gain enhancement and grating lobe suppression with respect to the radiation results of the reference antenna. The results show that the grating lobe are successfully suppressed by 11.45 dBi and 16.355 dBi for EBG and BON structures, respectively, with antenna scanning range +/- 40° at 6 GHz center frequency.
