Title

Laser beam cladding in controlled atmospheres

Abstract
3D laser beam cladding belongs currently to the most dedicated techniques for the repair of moulds, tools, as well as of aero engines, because of its high precision and advanced technological features. In particular, the restoration of components of Ti and Al base light alloys requires a certain environment to protect the metal melt form oxygen and nitrogen of the atmosphere during the welding process. For this purpose, a controlled atmosphere CAD/CAM cladding system using a sealed-off inert gas chamber has been developed. One example of application is the restoration of integrally bladed rotor disks (blisks) of high-performance aero engines. Using the new technology, a flawless near net-shape generation of t he airfoil profile is possible. Finally the investigation have shown that the strength properties of the laser generated specimens meet the corresponding values of the Ti alloy base material as well as the internal specifications of the engine manufacturer.
