Nanotribology in automotive industry
Abstract
Nanotribology in Automotive Industry The chapter describes and reviews nanoscale effects that occur at the sliding interface of macroscopic tribological systems such as a passenger car. It is shown that the wear rates in such a system are in the order of few nanometers per hour and that it is necessary to introduce the third body concept in order to understand running-in phenomena. Moreover, the chapter reviews some simulation results that demonstrate the effect of mechanical mixing. Finally atomic-scale wear studies, performed using Friction Force Microscopy, are discussed.
