Advanced Manufacturing - challenges of prototyping and scaling in battery cell development

This keynote introduces Fraunhofer FFB’s approach to accelerating and reducing the cost of battery cell development. It highlights the major cost drivers of battery production - high infrastructure investments, specialized equipment, and energy-intensive operation - and explains why rapid innovation is essential in the fast-moving battery industry. To address these challenges, Fraunhofer FFB combines a modular pilot production facility with a flexible, industry-oriented prismatic large-cell platform that enables fast customization and prototyping. By allowing new processes and technologies to be integrated into an existing production line, the concept significantly lowers development costs and shortens time-to-prototype while supporting a wide range of research objectives and industrial applications
