Manufacturing is the backbone of the economy. 230.000 enterprises with 27 Million employees create a yearly value added of EUR 1.300 billion. Its centres are in the middle of Europe. But at this time we have a migration of consumption and production of technical products to growing regions in the world and globalisation of manufacturing with high structural changes. All research and industrial organisations postulate initiatives to innovate manufacturing and leadership in manufacturing technologies especially in the German economy. Under the umbrella of "Manufuture" a research initiative has been started to accelerate research on EU, national and regional level. This initiative is based on a vision of manufacturing in 2020 and some thesis for the orientation of future manufacturing.
