Title

User centered HMI development applying the V-ISO model for collaborative car-2-x driver assistance systems

Abstract
In this paper a new application of the innovative V-ISO model, a combination of the V-model and the ISO 9241-210, is described for an automotive Human Machine Interface (HMI). The HMI is developed for two innovative car-2-x communication based applications, which are improving energy efficiency and traffic safety. The applications support social and collaborative driver-to-driver communication. By following the indicative steps of the V-ISO Model a HMI concept could be successfully developed and iteratively tested by experts and potential users in increasingly realistic mock-ups. In a driving simulator experiment with 25 participants the developed HMI system was tested with respect to subjective acceptance and user experience and its effects on the driving behavior. The system requirements collected in the initial step of the V-ISO model could be verified, indicating that the V-ISO model is a suitable approach for developing highly usable and accepted HMI systems and further demonstrating that the collaborative driver-to-driver communication approach works.
