A review. Foam ceramics are well established as filtration materials in the foundry industry. Due to their unique structure and the possibilities opened up by high-performance ceramics, foam ceramics and ceramic net-like structures have been developed for numerous applications at the Fraunhofter-Institut fuer Keramische Technologien und Sinterwerkstoffe IKTS (Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Sintered Materials), Dresden. In addn. to a general summary on porous materials, the foam-ceramic manufg. technol. is described extensively together with the resulting properties. The second part deals with metal melt filtration as well as recent applications, a no. of which have already been tech. implemented, while some are still at the development stage.
