Optical broad-band transmission systems

The paper describes the experiences gained with experimental digital and analogue optical broad-band transmission systems in the 0.85 mu m and 1.3 mu m wavelength region. Digital systems with bit rates up to 2.24 Gbit/s and analogue systems with a bandwidth up to 300 MHz were investigated. Special emphasis is laid on problems which are encountered when such systems are set-up with currently available opto-electronic components. Aspects for the further development of the optical broad-band transmission technique are outlined from the point of view of practical optical system engineering.
