P1394b-nodes for home networking and home automation

This contribution will outline the implementation of an IEEE1394-based infrastructure for home networking and entertainment combined to home automation purposes. Since the P1394b standard overcomes the limitations in node distance and the need of DC coupling by including optical media, the features of the serial bus have been greatly enhanced and cover both application areas. Functional considerations for 1394b-nodes according to these objectives are derived from typical home automation tasks. Preliminary design solutions for essential home networking and automation purposes are presented, while the implementation restrictions are pointed out that come from conventional electrical home equipment, its installation and use.
