GEIST - Geschichte vor Ort erleben

Location-based Services gewinnen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Durch sie werden dem Benutzer die zu seiner aktuellen Position passenden Informationen dargestellt. Im Rahmen des Projektes GEIST wird diese Technik mit Augmented Reality (AR) und Digital Storytelling verknüpft, sodass ein mobiles outdoor AR-System für den Einsatz im urbanen Umfeld entsteht. Dieses wird dazu eingesetzt, Schülern auf spielerische Art historische Fakten zu vermitteln und ihr Interesse für Geschichte zu wecken. Die Historischen Fakten und Fiktionen werden zu einer individuellen Geschichte zusammengefügt und zu einer eigenen Welt aufbereitet. Diese besteht aus realen, am jeweiligen Ort vorhandenen Objekten und virtuellen Ergänzungen, die sich positionsgenau in das Sichtfeld des Nutzers integrieren. Der Nutzer taucht mittels seines "Magischen Equipments" (see-throug glasses, etc.) in diese Welt ein und interagiert mit den "Geistern", die ihm hier begegnen.

In the GEIST project (the term "Geist" is the German expression for the English word "ghost") a system has been developed to educate students and grown-ups in history of a place by offering a personalized and lively tour without a guide. Therefore, technologies and innovative concepts from the areas Location based Services, Augmented Reality Visualisation and Digital Storytelling have been brought together into one system. Using see-through glasses the user gets in contact with the world created by the story. This world consists of a combination of real and virtual objects. The ghosts the user meets here are fictional or historical persons who lead him through his story. To make the real and virtual Objects overlapping each other, a tracking component has to calculate the user's movement through his real environment and transform it to a movement of the users representation in the virtual 3D world. The relation between the two environments is managed in a GIS.
