The RAVE research initiative: A successful collaborative research, development and demonstration programme

Abstract
In 2002, the German government set the target of reaching 20 to 25 GW of offshore wind power capacity installed in German waters by 2030. With financial support from the Federal Government, the trans-disciplinary research initiative RAVE (Research at Alpha VEntus) was set up to accompany the construction and operation of alpha ventus, Germany's first offshore windfarm, with research, development and demonstration activities. Over 30 individual projects conducted by over 50 partners from academia and industry focus on foundations and support structures, turbine technology and monitoring, environmental research including health and safety, and grid integration. Summarizing the initiative's achievements, it can be said that RAVE has been extremely successful.
