Chapter 5: Dynamic Concept at Fraunhofer

Abstract
This chapter describes an active latent heat storage system using phase change material (PCM) and a screw heat exchanger. The storage system could be used in waste heat applications in industry, or in concentrated solar power applications. The concept was developed by Fraunhofer ISE and tested at laboratory scale. In the tests, the storage design was improved, and it was shown that the storage system works with steam as heat transfer fluid. To allow designing the heat exchanger in future applications, the overall heat transfer coefficients U were determined. It was shown that for charging, the values for U are higher than for discharging.
