Abstract
A gas gun simulator that permits the generation of relatively clean, reacting, gas-flows with realistic ballistic gas pressures and temperatures has been developed. This gun is capable of simulating the interior and transitional ballistic flows of guns. The present paper describes experiments where the emphasis has been given to the study of muzzle flash phenomena. It has been shown for the first time that hydrogen/oxygen reactions alone can lead to secondary muzzle flash, and that this flash can be suppressed by the addition of alkali salts.
