Title
Adaptive Distance Protection Scheme for HV Grids with High Share of Distributed Energy Resources
Abstract
In this research paper, the authors have implemented an adaptive distance protection scheme to achieve a selective and sensitive protection scheme considering the influence of high infeed of the distributed energy resources. Due to this change of the power infeed, the short-circuit currents and eventually the impedance increase, which leads to zone overreaching, and thus zones of the distance protection become unselective. Here, a zone adaptation method for the distance relay with the help of communication is proposed, which adapts the distance polygons in an automated way with the help of the short-circuit measurement. The proposed solution is evaluated with case studies using the power system tool pandapower. The results with the default non-adapted and adapted settings are compared, and it is shown that the proposed method achieves a sensitive and selective tripping for all the cases.
