Title

Millimetre-wave Photonic Emitter Integrating a PIN-PD and Planar High Gain Antenna

Abstract
This paper presents a photonics based compact broadband emitter module working in the E-Band (60 - 90 GHz) for wireless communications. A high-speed InGaAs/InGaAsP PIN photodiode (PIN-PD) chip, with a 3-dB bandwidth of 53 GHz and more than 0 dBm output RF power, is integrated into a high gain broadband planar antenna. The integrated device exhibits a stable optoelectronic frequency response with a peak radiated power of -4.5 dBm (352 μW) and a wide bandwidth of 30 GHz. The presented planar antenna and hybrid integration approach for the photomixers enables realisation towards the millimetre wave and terahertz antenna-integrated photonic antenna array emitters.
