Detection of thickness changes in compressed battery cells

An apparatus and method for non-contact and spatially resolved measurement of thickness changes in compressed flat lithium-ion battery cells during cycling is presented. This approach can be applied to end-of-line quality control in manufacturing battery cells. The large amount of measured data generated is used in machine-learning models to quickly and unambiguously evaluate the quality of the battery cell.
