Expert systems are increasingly used in industry. This dissertation describes an approach to the development of an expert system for the determination of defects on the surface of sheet metal. it gives information on establishing their causes and suggests methods for their avoidance or elimination. The dissertation is subdivided into three parts: Cold reduction mills and the -problems and technology involved in operating the milling gear proper Theoretical foundations of an expert system development process with special emphasis on knowledge acquisition The description of an example solution to illustrate the approach chosen Emphasis has been given to finding a solution which is comprehensible and easily re-use by any potential customers. The expert system works with the Smart Elements 1.0 shell.
