Title
Application of semantic media wikis for technology monitoring in the construction industry
Abstract
During the last decade, the application of semantic media wikis in the context of technology monitoring is gaining more importance. Technology monitoring is a collaborative approach integrating different information sources and stakeholders and social-software systems such as media wikis. This seems appropriate to support and streamline this process. Several research projects in the construction industry during the last years focussed on this topic. This research paper will present results from two different projects in the EeB area that developed a so-called technology wiki embedded in a technology monitoring framework and will explain the advantages of using a social-software system as well as the functionalities that have been implemented. There are some examples showing good impact if such systems are used in companies to strengthen the internal innovation process in early stages. However, the advantage of using such systems in company or stakeholder networks is still rarely examined. The research work reveals that the use of wikis supports the collaboration between professionals in the design stage but also the integration of laymen such as private building owners if the different needs of both stakeholder groups are considered. This paper will give recommendations concerning the functionalities of such a software-system if used in a cross-company context and point out different use-cases in the order-fulfilment process of the construction industry. The example from the NewBEE project focuses on strengthening the customer-interface between retrofitting company and building owner in the business case definition stage of a retrofitting project. The case of the Design4Energy project will show how a technology wiki can be integrated in a holistic, software-supported design concept for new buildings.
