Free virtual impulse generator (VIG) to determine the impulse generator settings online

Abstract
Standard Lightning Impulses (LI) and Switching Impulses (SI) for test purposes, i.e. switch-gear, cables, or power transformers, have to meet a voltage-time-curve with certain tolerances according to IEC 60060-1 [1]. Before starting the impulse voltage test, there are two important questions to be answered: 1. Can a certain test case be met by existing impulse generator in accordance with the relevant standards? 2. Which settings are required for the special test case? There are a lot of technical papers which deal with this problem [2], [3]. Different approaches are described based on differential equations, LAPLACE-transformation, etc. This paper introduces a progress in field of differential equations. The solution - VIG2011 (Virtual Impulse Generator) - is meant for teaching purposes as well as for supporting test laboratory practices. It is important here to understand the influence of the circuit element values on the resulted voltage shape. The solution running via internet connection is realised by a virtual impulse generator interface for all commonly used internet browsers.
