How to configure your MASS? Technical Building Blocks for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships

The core focus of MASS is the nautical department. Starting from typical tasks on a bridge, an overview about available and proven methodologies, algorithms, sensors and technologies will be given that can be used as a technical building block given the current state of the art. This is covering building blocks for new MASS-related systems as will be demonstrated with selected demonstration examples. This serves as a landscaping document for individually configuring the optimal MASS for the individual use case. Additionally, challenges in the transition from state-of-the-art to MASS state-of-the-industry are highlighted with regards to validation and verification of individual building blocks, which could e.g. be encountered by a newly proposed Module K in the Marine Equipment Directive during the Experience Building Phase of the upcoming MASS code.
