Optical fibers monitor particle accelerators

The DESY laboratory in Hamburg is planning to build a 33-km linear collider. In order to fine-tune the beam to the equipment, scientists must determine the size and location of any radiation leaks. A newly developed fiber-optic measuring technique provides the answer.
