Abstract
The objective of APROSYS Sub-Project 6 (SP6), "Intelligent Safety Systems", is the development and verification of an advanced side pre-crash system for occupant protection. This report describes part of the system evaluation done in WP6.5. The reference for the evaluation is the generic assessment methodology developed within APROSYS WP1.3 (D1.3.2). The transfer to SP6 and application of the methodology within WP6.5 is described in D6.5.1 Adhering to this evaluation methodology, this part of the deliverable provides a report into the "Relevant supporting information" and, in particular, into "Normal driving performance" - based on field and track tests. The specific objective of this study is to monitor: - alarms / alarm rates - critical situations / missing alarms - false alarms / situations and, in addition, to comment and make recommendations (i.e. to reassess the applicability of the proposed methodology) on the: - practicability of such tests - reproducibility of such tests The system performance concerning "must fire" / "true alarm test scenarios" is assessed und reported in the sister report D6.5.3A ("pre-crash performance") - Together with D6.5.2/D6.5.4 ("crash performance") almost the complete assessment methodology is then applied. The system under test is a so-called pre-crash side impact protection system. Sensors monitor the exterior environment and if a critical situation is recognised an actuator increases the rigidity of the vehicle/door structure, thus reducing both the intrusion and the velocity of the intrusion against the impacted side. The sensor technologies used in the "experimental vehicle" are: - 24 GHz sideways-looking short-range radar system - Sideways-looking stereo camera system The field test was conducted between 29 May 2007 and 2 June 2007, inclusive. It involved: - Experimental Vehicle (VUT), fitted with the APROSYS sensor system application - Observation Vehicle, with a recording and observation system - Back-up vehicle from FhG Karlsruhe - system support The test drive was conducted over 2.061 km through parts of France, Italy, Austria and Germany. The route included all types of roads (motorways, country roads) in roughly the same ratio. Inner-city traffic was particularly well represented by including Lyons, Milan and Munich in the route. During the test drive, 67 triggering events by the APROSYS system were recorded. The report discusses how these alarms should be assessed. The appropriate categories proposed were "acceptable", "plausible" and "false". To supplement the field test, track tests were conducted between 25 and 29 (inclusive) June 2007 on a cordoned-off area of "Memminger Berg" airport. The test scenarios were considered to be appropriately challenging for the sensor systems and the decision algorithms as regards the requirement to distinguish between an accident situation and non-accident or near-accident situations (near misses) and, accordingly, were defined in advance (D6.5.1.). The individual test drive scenarios were repeated by the test drivers. Throughout the whole of the track test period, four triggering events were recorded. Examined using an "encounter ratio" (objects or vehicle per unit of time), this performance roughly equates to that which was observed in the field test. The APROSYS system being tested in this project can be said to have performed well in this specific test cluster. Aspects of the evaluation method were discussed both from a product development perspective and from that of an end user assessment.
