Might biomechanical effects influence biocompatibility tests in bone?

Abstract
The biomechanical situation of pin-shaped specimens in a long bone is considered. Photoelastic investigations and Finite Element calculations show that the original stress distribution may be completely disturbed in the surroundings of the specimen. The changes strongly depend on its stiffness and interface conditions. It is suggested to taken into account these effects in evaluating biocompatibility tests.
