Test systems based of respiratory measurements (oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide formation) will be used to investigate the degree and completeness of biodegradation of different materials, substances or pollutants. Special reactors combined with computer based control, data recording, and evaluation allow long-term tests and an exact evaluation of the results. The different new and special developments of biodegradation test systems (e.g. aerobic aquatic, aerobic solid-state, anaerobic aquatic) will be presented and the variety of their applications will be discussed.
