Time-resolved gas analysis. IR-laser spectroscopy as a tool to study combustion processes
Abstract
Infrared diode laser spectroscopy enables dynamic exhaust gas analysis with millisecond time response. A spectroscopic analyser for the simultaneous measurement of two exhaust gas components at two sampling locations for operation under test bed conditions is described. Some results obtained by means of this system on NO, CO, and CH4 at a number of renowned European and US American automotive companies are presented thus illustrating the potential of measurements with single cycle time resolution. Main areas of application are the detailed studies of engine combustion, the test of combustion models, engine fine tuning for reduction of fuel consumption and pollution emission, as well as the study of other fast chemical conversions.
