DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Metal chelates of formula (I) are used as ultraviolet (UV) protection agents in polymeric materials. XmMLn (I) X = 1-6C alkoxy, 6-12C aryloxy or halide; m = 0-3; M = a metal ion; L = a chelating ligand; and n = 1-3. Provided that: (a) X or L is hydrolyzable so that (I) can be bound to the polymeric material by co-condensation; and/or (b) L has a functional group such that (I) can be bound to the polymeric material by copolymerization. USE - (I)-containing polymeric materials (claimed) are useful in coating compositions, e.g. lacquers, for protecting UV-sensitive materials, and for making shaped products. ADVANTAGE - (I) provide high and long-lasting absorption of UV radiation (including short wavelengths), can be used at high concentrations without separate radical scavengers and do not significantly impair the mechanical properties (especially scratch resistance and adhesion) of polymeric materials.
