Es wird ein Ultraschallwandler (10) zur Erzeugung und/oder Erfassung von Ultraschallschwingungen mit einem Oszillatorelement (11) beschrieben, das in einem Gehaeuse (12) angeordnet ist, wobei das Gehaeuse (12) ein inkompressibles Innenmedium (13) enthaelt und mindestens eine Druckausgleichseinrichtung (14) aufweist, mit der ein Druck von einem aeusseren Druckmedium ueber das Innenmedium (13) auf das Oszillatorelement (11) uebertragbar ist. Es wird auch ein Verfahren zum Betrieb eines derartigen Ultraschallwandlers (10) zur Erzeugung und/oder Erfassung von Ultraschallschwingungen in einem Druckmedium beschrieben.
