The end of the applicator has a laser with a beam which is fed via an optical fibre and a beam shaping optical system to the end of the applicator. The end of the applicator includes a device for directing a laser beam towards the optical axis of an optical fibre. The directing device comprises a deflection member which is driven at variable frequency and/or deflection angle, e.g. by an acousto-optical modulator. The deflection member may be a mechano-optical rotator. ADVANTAGE - Improved access to diseased tissue areas. Enables quick coagulation or vaporisation of tissue, without leading to uncontrolled necrosis formation in irradiated region.
