The comb generator has a light source (26) which is frequency modulated with the output signal of the frequency generator, whose frequency is adjusted by the control circuitry, and with a regulation signal. The output light from the comb light source acts on an optical, non-linear component (38) to generate several side bands about an average frequency set by the regulation signal. The side bands have frequency intervals corresponding to a multiple of the frequency of the output signal of the frequency transmitter (13). The optical frequency generator also has a superposition unit (6) in which the output light of the comb generator is superimposed onto output light from the reference light source. The comb generator light source is pref. a mode coupled semiconductor laser with an external resonator.
