The invention relates to a process for the production of metal hydroxides and/or metal oxide hydroxides from corresponding metal ions and hydroxide ions, whereby the metal ions are formed in a diaphragm electrochemical process where the metal ions are formed in the anode chamber by the anodic reduction of corresponding metals and the hydroxide ions are formed by the cathodic reduction of water in the cathode chamber separated by an anion exchange diaphragm, and the hydroxide ions are transferred to the anode chamber through the anion exchange diaphragm by the driving force of an electric field.
