The continuous or quasi-continuous kinematic chain comprises a sensor system for recording a spatial configuration of the kinematic chain, which has a spatial sequence of flexible segments (2). A rigid limiting element (3) is provided between two adjacent segments and at the ends of the sequence. The limiting elements are connected with each other by a connecting element (7). An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a spatial configuration of a continuous or quasi-continuous kinematic chain.
