Cleaning apparatus, comprising a handle and a holder fixed to the handle, wherein a mop is replaceably fixable to the holder, wherein the cleaning apparatus is equipped with a device for detecting the area to be cleaned covered by the cleaning apparatus, wherein means are provided which detect the relative position and/or relative movement of the cleaning apparatus with respect to the area to be cleaned, wherein, using the relative position and/or relative movement detected by the means, it can be detected that the mop is being sent for replacement or for a rinsing process, and wherein the means thereupon automatically reset the area determined by the device, and method for detecting the area to be cleaned covered by a cleaning apparatus.
