A device for investigating the structural condition of a sample comprising metallic substances has at least one ultrasonic transducer (9, 19) with which a transversal ultrasonic wave can be generated and received without any means of coupling. At least two electromagnetic ultrasound transducers (9, 19) are provided, each of which can generate a linear polarized transversal ultrasonic wave. Its polarization directions are at an angle to each other, whereby the ultrasonic transducers are arranged in such a fashion that the ultrasonic waves are mainly injected into the sample at the same location at the same propagation direction perpendicular to the surface and are received in general at the same location.
