The description refers to a device for supporting the function of the heart and has the following features: - a hollow body whose inner and outer contours are formed to such an extent that it can be inserted in the human thorax so that it surrounds the heart with the exception of the arteries going to and away from the heart, - in the hollow body, there is a sack which has several inflatable air chambers which are supported on the hollow body, - a control unit controls a pneumatic drive which fills and empties each of the chambers in such a way that the sack presses on the left chamber of the heart in synchronism with the heart's activity so that blood is pressed into the arteries.
