A quartz crystal timer with an analogue display has a movement supplied by an electrical battery (8) with an operating voltage of approximately 1.2 volts, which can be recharged by a photovoltic array of solar cells (4), and a monitoring device which monitors the charge state of the battery (8). The monitoring device records the operating voltage of the battery (8) as an input signal and is connected to a liquid crystal display (3) which presents a pictogram referring to the charge state of the battery. The liquid crystal display (3) is controlled directly by a clock signal of the movement via an inductive normal-mode voltage upconverter (2), if the operating voltage of the battery (8) drops below a preset value and is not sufficient to reliably control the movement at that moment. In addition to this, the voltage generated by the solar cells (4) is applied to the monitoring device. The monitoring device suppresses control of the liquid crystal display (3) if the voltage of the solar c ells is near to zero volts.
