Abstract
Stationary phase (I) for chromatography is modified with chemically bound dendrimers or dendrons. MORE SPECIFICALLY - The outer spheres of the dendrimers or dendrons is functionalised with OR1, Y or NR2R3 groups. R1 = H or optionally substituted 1-20C alkyl or up to 10C aryl; Y = halo; R2, R3 = H or optionally substituted 1-20 C alkyl, 3-6 C cycloalkyl, 6-10C aryl or up to 10C aralkyl. The R2 and/or R3 groups are especially substituted by OH, OR1, NH2, CN or COOR1. (I) is based on functionalised silica gel, especially functionalised with NH2. USE - (I) is useful for liquid chromatography (claimed), especially thin film chromatography and high power liquid chromatography (HPLC). (I) modified with chiral amines or ligands containing amino groups (effectors) are useful for chiral or affinity chromatography. ADVANTAGE - Chemical bonding of the dendrimers or dendrons prevents the modifier washing or bleeding out. This modification also maximises the number of functional groups effecting sep aration and/or the size of the stationary layer and hence increases the separation capacity.
