Die Erfindung betrifft eine Vorrichtung und ein Verfahren zum Kuehlen bandfoermiger Substrate im Vakuum, wobei ein Substrat (1) derart gefuehrt wird, dass es eine konvexe Kuehlflaeche zumindest teilweise in einem Kontaktbereich (3) umschlingt und im Kontaktbereich (3) ein Spalt (10) zwischen Substrat (1) und Kuehlflaeche ausgebildet wird, wobei in mindestens einem ersten Bereich (11) des Spaltes (10) ein Fluid durch die Kuehlflaeche hindurch zugefuehrt und dieses Fluid zumindest teilweise aus mindestens einem zweiten Bereich (12; 13) des Spaltes (10) durch die Kuehlflaeche hindurch abgefuehrt wird.
