The method involves operating the load via contacts of an electromagnetic switch with a semiconducting switch (6) connected in parallel with its contacts. During operation with closed contacts (4) of the electromagnetic switch (5), the semiconducting switch drive is at least temporarily interrupted to avoid the high voltage drop across the mechanical contacts caused by increased contact resistance. This blocks the semiconducting switch when increased contact resistance occurs and hence increases the voltage at the mechanical contact. ADVANTAGE - The operating life of parallel connected switching elements, mechanical contacts and semiconductor switches, is significantly increased.
