The manufacturing method is used to provide a field emission electron source with a diamond content layer as the electron emitter and an anode at a given distance to the latter. A diamond particle and metal bath is used to provide a metallic dispersion layer (4) containing the diamond particles on the surface of a carrier substrate (1), e.g. via galvanic coating. The diamond particles can be doped with boron and/or phosphor before formation of the coating bath, with formation of the diamond particles via detonation synthesis.
