Process for the welding of workpieces (10) using laser radiation which is focused on the relatively moved workpiece (10) and causes an evaporation of the material, whereby, in addition to the laser radiation, an arc (12) is applied to the area of the workpiece (10) exposed to the laser radiation. In order to improve the welding result, the process is performed in such a way that a workpiece (10) is used with a dielectric-free surface track guiding the arc (12) in a dielectric layer (15) covering the entirety of the remaining welding area (14).
