NOVELTY - A non-contact gas sensor is positioned close to the welding point, detecting the concentration of gases which cause porosity and are produced by the welding process. This concentration is compared with a target value. The sensor is positioned either immediately over the weld point to capture the welding flare and/or at the welding location in the steam capillary. USE - To detect the presence of gases emitted by a welding process. ADVANTAGE - The process enables a manufacturer to create an on-line record of the quality of each weld.
