The description refers to a process for welding workpieces, in particular coated workpieces, comprising a device for generating at least a gap existing at the welding point. The invention is characterized by the fact that the device for generating a gap has at least one element which sets at least one of the workpieces to be welded in motion having opposing directions of movement directly with or through the intermediary of one or several load transmission elements joined to the workpiece by means of a non-positive connection in such a way that a gap occurs between the workpieces to be welded at least at the welding point in an average period of time.
