The device comprises an energy store and a switching element. In the voltage range up to several hundred volts, fast semiconductors are available for setting up such generators or with metal oxide field effect transistors to permit pulse generation. These switching elements have only a low thermal capacitance. In order to permit almost any voltage curves and a high level of efficiency in a low-cost design, coupled oscillation circuits are envisaged as energy stores to which energy can be coupled via several switching elements in such a way that the amplitude of the voltage curves at the oscillation circuit capacitances or the current curves through the oscillation circuit inductances correspond to Fourier coefficients of a development of the required output signal according to the reference frequencies of the oscillation circuits. The device permits the generation of almost any voltage and current curves, in particular steep high amplitude pulses. The device can therefore be m anufactu red at very low cost
