Abstract
In a process for creating coupling layers on plastic surfaces with low surface energy, particularly polyolefins, a UV light beam (4) is focussed on a resin based material (6) and vapourised resin particles are directed onto the surface of the plastic component (3) to be coated. Preferably suitable materials (3) for coating are polypropylene and polyoxymethylene. The UV light wavelength is 193-308 nm and frequencies vary from 1Hz up to continuous operation. 30-150 impulses are emitted each of 20ns duration and having an impulse energy of 0.1-10 J/sq cm, preferably 0.5-5 J/sq cm. USE - For treating the surfaces of polyolefin components with low surface energy to permit better adhesion of coatings or adhesives. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple and inexpensive and has no detrimental effect on the polymer surface.
