Positioning via GPS is a well known solution outdoors, but fails in rough urban environment and buildings. Therefore there is a need for a cheap, easy to deploy positioning technology for indoor and urban outdoor applications. Cellular local networks like DECT and 802.11 WLAN are widely spread. The positioning technology developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits at Erlangen is able to track the position of DECT-or WLAN-enabled devices using standard wireless network components. By making this information available to central systems a complete change of today´s business and production process is to be expected. Especially a location technology that needs no infrastructure of its own has the greatest chance to win the race on market. The increasing availability of 802.11 radio communication networks favours WLAN based location methods. Moreover this technology allows the exchange of additional information between central server and the located device. Aim of current research projects is to increase the efficiency of logistical processes as localization of dynamic logistical objects like beds in clinical complexes or navigation of passengers in public transportation. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen/Nuremberg has been working for several years on the field of localization. Technologies include satellite positioning, wireless high accuracy positioning and localization using existing infrastructure.en621Optimization of logistical processes through embedded localizationconference paper
