By measuring the data flow for a simulated application running on an experimental configuration the design phase can be supported. There is a need for an efficient fault diagnosis in distributed computer systems, as detection and localization of faults - especially system faults within the local area network - are time consuming and therefore expensive because of the difficult assignment of faults to components. This applies to the maintenance of systems in operation, but to a large degree to their commissioning, too. Fault diagnosis and design can be supported efficiently by a monitor.
